“Education is the foundation of a free nation — and the university is its citadel.”
— Ashutosh Mukherjee
The Story
Born in 1864, Ashutosh Mukherjee was a prodigy of mathematics — he stood first in the university examinations and earned a double degree in mathematics and physics while still a student. He went on to qualify as a lawyer and rose to become a judge of the Calcutta High Court, one of the youngest in its history.
But his life's work was education: as the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University from 1906, he expanded it into a great institution — opening postgraduate teaching, founding departments of science, and establishing the university as a centre of learning that could stand with the best of the world. He fought the British bureaucracy at every step to win autonomy and resources for the university.
His determination earned him the title of the Tiger of Bengal — a man who would not be cowed. He died in 1924, and his legacy is visible in every institution of higher learning of Bengal: the university he built educated the generations that led the freedom movement and built modern Bhārat.
