The Story
Born in 1891 in Gubbi, Veeranna founded his drama company in his youth and built it into the greatest theatrical organisation of Karnataka. His company toured the towns and villages of the state, staging the mythological, historical, and social plays of the age with a professionalism that set the standard of the Kannada stage.
He was not only a producer but a mentor: his company trained some of the finest actors and actresses of the Kannada stage and screen, and his productions — with their music, their spectacle, and their craft — made the theatre the entertainment of the people for half a century.
He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan and the title of the king of the Kannada stage. He died in 1972, and his name remains the greatest in the history of the theatre of Karnataka — the man who took the stage to the people.
