“Let the river's force be turned into light for the people.”
— On Seshadri Iyer's Shivanasamudra scheme
The Story
A lawyer from Travancore, Seshadri Iyer entered the service of Mysore and rose to become its Dewan at the age of thirty-eight — the second to hold that office under the restored Wodeyars. His eighteen-year tenure is the hinge on which Mysore's modernity turns.
His most famous act was the Shivanasamudra scheme: harnessing the Cauvery's falls at Shivanasamudra to generate electricity, which began flowing in 1902 — the first hydro-electric project in Asia. The power lit Bangalore's streets and ran the Mysore factories, making the state the industrial leader of the princely world.
He was also a crucial ally of visionaries from outside: when Jamsetji Tata was choosing a site for his institute of science in 1899, his conversation with the Dewan of Mysore helped settle the choice of Bangalore — the seed of the Indian Institute of Science. Under him Mysore expanded its education, forestry and public works.
He retired and died in 1901. The hydro-electric stations, the institutions and the reputation for clean administration he left behind earned him a title and an enduring epithet: the maker of modern Mysore.
