“Education is the foundation of freedom — teach the child of Bhārat to stand tall.”
— Pandit Taranath
The Story
Born in 1891, Pandit Taranath was a scholar and teacher who was deeply troubled by the anglicised education of the time, which made the children of Bhārat strangers to their own land. He believed that true freedom required an education rooted in the culture of Bhārat.
In 1921 he founded the Gurukula at Kapani, near Dharwad — a school in the ancient style, where students lived with their teacher, studied the scriptures and the classics of Bhārat, and were trained in body and mind together. The Gurukula became a centre of national education, drawing students and teachers devoted to the ideal of a free Bhārat.
His school was also a centre of the freedom movement, and Taranath himself was arrested for his nationalism. He died in 1943, but his Gurukula continued the work he had begun — the education of the children of Bhārat in the spirit of their own civilisation.
