“Mysticism is not the denial of reason — it is reason crowned with experience.”
— R.D. Ranade
The Story
Born in 1886 in Jamkhandi, Ranade was a brilliant student of philosophy who joined the University of Allahabad and taught there for three decades, becoming the head of its philosophy department. He was a rigorous scholar of the traditions of Bhārat — but he sought not only to study the mystics but to live their life.
His great works — Indian Mysticism: Mysticism in Maharashtra and Mysticism in Karnataka — surveyed the lives and visions of the saints of the two regions with a sympathy that only a fellow seeker could bring. He showed that the mysticism of Bhārat was not superstition but the highest form of spiritual knowledge, grounded in experience.
He retired to a life of study and contemplation in his later years, and died in 1957. He is honoured as the philosopher of mysticism of Bhārat — the scholar who proved that the saints were the true philosophers of the land.
