“All land belongs to all — and the landlord must give a share to the landless, in love.”
— Vinoba Bhave
The Story
Born in 1895 in Gagode, Vinoba was drawn to Gandhi in his youth and became his devoted disciple, living in the ashrams and serving in the freedom movement. He was the first satyagrahi of the individual satyagraha of 1940, and his life of simplicity and prayer made him the natural heir of the Mahatma.
In 1951, walking through the Telangana region where the landless were in revolt, Vinoba asked the landlords to give land to the landless — and the first gift came. So began the Bhoodan movement: Vinoba walked across Bhārat for years, and his appeal collected millions of acres of land, given in love, for the poorest of the land.
He died in 1982, honoured as one of the great saints of the modern age. His Bhoodan movement changed the lives of hundreds of thousands, and his life — the walker, the prayer, the gift — remains one of the most remarkable chapters in the history of the nation's conscience.
