Natural Wonders

“Come in the morning and the sea is there. Come in the afternoon and there is only sand.”

— The wonder of Chandipur

The Story

Few beaches on Earth reveal their floor like Chandipur. Twice a day, the Bay of Bengal recedes up to five kilometres, and where water once stood you can walk out onto a landscape of sand, crabs, and creeper-covered dunes — a rare phenomenon that draws the curious from across Bhārat.

At high tide the sea returns, advancing over the exposed flats to reclaim its shore. Fishermen time their lives to the rhythm: they follow the retreating water to catch fish stranded in the shallows, then race the tide back to land with their day's catch.

The beach is lined with the red-tipped flowers and casuarina trees that give the shoreline its look, and the low-tide expanse is a natural playground — a place where the horizon, the sand, and the sky seem to stretch into infinity.

Why it matters today

Chandipur is the Bay of Bengal's own magic trick — a beach that hides itself twice a day, reminding everyone who walks its seabed that the ocean's timetable is not ours, but its own.
