When I was a kid, it was fun to be distributing one of the most expensive Indian origin chocolate brands back then, in the class after getting wished by a ton of friends. This has been a practice in most places across the world. My selection has always been the Elaichi aromatic Kismi Toffee bar. Even though I was getting embarrassed to say the word as a kid, the taste and the aroma never used to stop me from selecting this as the only option to distribute.

We can gulp one or two of these without any thought as they are from a premium food brand Parle.

This is the second and one of the most famous Indian chocolate brands of India especially with respect to milk. Yes, we are talking about the one and only Amul. This is run as a cooperative society that holds every person who is involved as a stakeholder, making everyone owner.

This type of society was a vision of Dr. Kurien who was responsible for this mission. His discussion with the then action-oriented prime minister whom we lost at a very young age was none other than Sri Lal Bahadur Shashtri. The discussion of them both gave birth to a cooperative society.

This later went on to become one of the most famous brands in India, in the FMCG sector. The chocolates of AMUL can certainly be compared to Cadbury. There are many versions of this and they are all “Utterly Butterly Delicious”.

One more Indian chocolate company that was founded in 1973 in Mangalore is also a cooperative society. In those days the commodity trading, especially with areca nut and cocoa traders, was erratic and a lot of people had to suffer due to this fact.

To mitigate this suffering a cooperative society by the name CAMPCO (Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative Limited) was formed. This though was initially confined to a few places in Karnataka, it has spread its wings to Gujarat, Maharashtra, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, New Delhi, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Assam, and Goa.

It manufactures chocolates under its own brand and also caters to Nestle. A statue of the founder president of Campco Late Sri. Varanashi Subraya Bhat stands in front of the main manufacturing unit.

Chocolate is a byproduct of Cocoa powder mixed with milk in a certain way. This Cocoa powder is, in turn, roasted Cacao seeds.

When the proud owner of this brand became aware of the fact that these Cacao seeds are not harvested in the way they had to be, the gap was fulfilled by a proper transfer of knowledge on how to harvest Cacao seeds.

This led to the creation of one of the awesome made in India chocolate brands in the name of the brand Sihi Chocolateries. These chocolates are a result of the finest beans carefully harvested and graded by farmers.

These chocolate brands made in India are from the northeastern part that apart from comprising the regular Cocoa powder, Vanilla, milk, etc. as ingredients, there is much more added to this brand. Started by a young entrepreneur along with her partner, it stresses on giving opportunities for the local farmers in producing the local crops that are being underutilized.

This has brought in a huge change in the economy in the farmers who are locally producing what can be easily grown as opposed to what is being made as an international standard.

They have been using the underutilized north-eastern ingredients such as

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Hodgsonia
  • Plum wine
  • Naga King Chilli

The company even creates rum raisins and whiskey truffles!

Ooty is called the queen of mountains right from when it was invaded by the Britishers. As we all know Ooty is a relatively cold place to stay in. During the 18th century, when Britishers had just come, it was in the queen of mountains that they would stay in, in the summer, especially when it was too hot in Chennai. As time went by Ooty was declared as the summer-time vacation town.

In addition to this, the Britishers always had a craving for chocolates. So, when they were there in Ooty, they used to import chocolates. However, owing to the hot climatic conditions of India, the chocolates imported were getting melted. So they had to find a new way to preserve them from getting melted.

This is when one of the Britishers set up a chocolate factory, slowly giving birth to many other companies that were started by Indians. This led to a lot of companies starting their own chocolate firms making Ooty a famous place for chocolates.
