Amul

This is the second and one of the most famous Indian chocolate brands of India especially with respect to milk. Yes, we are talking about the one and only Amul. This is run as a cooperative society that holds every person who is involved as a stakeholder, making everyone owner.

This type of society was a vision of Dr. Kurien who was responsible for this mission. His discussion with the then action-oriented prime minister whom we lost at a very young age was none other than Shri Lal Bahadur Shashtri. The discussion of them both gave birth to a cooperative society.

This later went on to become one of the most famous brands in India, in the FMCG sector. The chocolates of AMUL can certainly be compared to Cadbury. There are many versions of this and they are all “Utterly Butterly Delicious”.

Mother dairy

In 1974 Mother Dairy was commissioned as a wholly owned subsidiary of National Dairy Development Board, under a dairy development program aiming at making India a milk sufficient nation, under operation flood. While in the initial days it was more just a part of Delhi region, at a later stage, it expanded to the other parts of the country.

KMF

The first of the dairy co-operatives that make up KMF started in 1955 in Kudige, Kodagu District. KMF was founded in 1974 as Karnataka Dairy Development Corporation (KDDC) to implement a dairy development project run by the World Bank. In 1984 the organisation was renamed KMF. KMF has 14 milk unions throughout the Karnataka State which procure milk from Primary Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) and distribute milk to the consumers in various urban and rural markets in Karnataka State with 1,500 members.[2]

History

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) was in the news in 2010 for price increases in milk.[3]

Occasionally, there is spillover from Karnataka politics into the activities of KMF,[4] including the elections for the post of chairman,[5][6] and the timing of the milk price hike[7] after the BBMP elections but before the Gram Panchayat elections in 2010.

Rajkumar has worked as the ambassador, free of cost and had done his first and last television commercial in 1996. Later Puneeth Rajkumar was selected as the ambassador for Nandini Products. In Dec 2009, Puneeth Rajkumar signed an agreement with KMF, free of cost. In 2014 Shriya Saran was selected as Nandini Good Life Product Ambassador in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh. Ragini Dwivedi was also selected as ambassador in Karnataka.

Vadilal

A family business of the different Gandhis, being passed on the grandfather to his grandsons. Yes, in as early as 1926 Vadilal Gandhi started a Soda Fountain, which he later passed this on to his son, Ranchod Lal. Until he in turn passed this on to his sons, it was a one man army. His sons Ramchandra and Lakshman, who inherited the business were instrumental in giving the inherited company a new direction. Due to their efforts the company evolved into a modern corporate giant.

Naturals

The Kamaths of Mumbai own this brand that was founded by Raghunandan S Kamat. He was the person to have opened its first store at Juhu, Vile Parle (Mumbai) in 1984. The name under which this brand operates is Kamaths Ourtimes and retail operations. In 2017 there were some brands that emerged due to which Naturals thought of rebranding. They came up with a tagline “Taste the Original”, followed by a concept store in Juhu named Naturals Now. This experience store serves freshly straight out of the churned ice cream.

Dinshaws

Two brothers, whose dream was to establish an enterprise retaining the quality with new ice cream flavors, giving people what they truly admired, were the Rana brothers, Dinshaw and Erachshaw. This continued to become a success, which led the duo to expand into several dairy products spanning across the country.

They have a huge market share in central India apart from starting to capture the country. They have their presence in the following parts of the country:

Havmor

The foundation that was laid way back in Karachi in 1944 proved to be a great success, becoming an integral part of every fun gathering that takes place in Gujarat. In addition to that, it has proved to become synonymous with deliciousness. In 1947, post independence, Sri Satish Chandra Chona (the founder) had to relocate to India where he started the venture from scratch on a handcart at Ahmedabad Railway Station, churning out ice creams manually.

The two important aspects of having the ice creams were key in naming the brand.

Giani

What started amidst the bazaars of Fatehpuri, Chandni Chowk, in 1956 by Giani Gurcharan Singh, a traditional sweetmeat maker, became one of the famous brands in the country. Giani was affected by the partition and moved to Delhi from Lyallpur (Daislabad), Pakistan. 

He started serving his tasty items like Rabri-faluda and Mango Shakes, made with keen attention and dedication, with the best available quality ingredients. Being happy about the items prepared by Giani, his customers made them a household name in no time.

With an investment of Rs. 12,000/- in those days (1962), Giani bought his first machine a second hand one. Soon, this entity was divided into two.

Kwality

In 1992, when there was a need for an ice cream company, Kwality Ice Creams Pvt. India Ltd. was formed under the main company Kwality Dairy (India) Ltd. This company was later acquired by the Dhingra family in the year 2002. It soon became one of the fastest growing private sector dairy companies with a new range of innovative products. It has a larger presence in the northern part of the country when compared to the south.

This being a very large company, comes with a capacity to handle 3 million liters of milk everyday. Having six manufacturing units, most of them in UP. Like,

Arun Icecreams

This ice cream brand is a brand with a difference. When the other brands were keen on opening parlours in the city catering to the urban class, Arun ice creams had their parlours opened in sub urban and rural areas, making their way into the hearts of millions of countrymen. 

By doing this it came automatically to them to cater to different types of people. Based on their tastes they cater the ice creams right from kids to oldies, suburbans to urbans to rural, fitting each person’s budget.

In addition to all this, this brand comes up with seasonal flavours as and when the fruits show their availability. This instills in the customers to walk into their shop to get a fresh and different scoop of ice cream almost each time they enter.

What now stands as an empire, an ice cream empire, is being developed by the five grandsons of the founder of this brand. It is their complete ability to have upscaled what was started in 1969 by Late Shri Balchand Kukreja. These 48 plus glorious years of the brand has been the dream of the founder. In the history this was a hubble beginning of Ramani Icecream Company Limited.

Joy Ice Cream

Being a part of the first few ice creams that were industrially manufactured in India, this brand also takes the credit of starting in 1948, just post independence. The founder, L.C. Java, returned from London who was a mining graduate.

Not compromising on the quality, he made sure that their ice creams were affordable and available for every one from any strata of the society. This can be visible when the Heat Treatment Act was implemented in India in 1960. This is when the company proved that they were already following this method and that it was not necessary to change the protocols. 

Cream Stone

In 2009, this brand was started with a chain of ice cream parlors starting from Hyderabad. As time went by, they started expanding into other cities like:

Ideal Ice Cream

Sri Prabhakar Kamat, hailing from Mangaluru, India, started this brand in 1974 in a small shop. Today this brand is the biggest in Mangaluru, having a market share of 80% and having outlets in four places around Mangaluru. 

The most sold and sought-after item from this brand is their signature dish called by the name Gadbad. It is served in a tall glass with different layers each comprising of the following:

  • Jelly
  • Dry Fruits
  • Fresh Fruits

People wait in queues to have this flavor with different layers.

MILMA

Registered as a cooperative society in 1980 with a head office in Thiruvananthapuram, this is called in two names. Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (KCMMF) or Milma. It is a federation of three milk unions:

MRCMPU

Like many other true cooperative societies, even this follows a cooperative structure which is also one of the most profitable cooperatives in Kerala. In 1983, it also took over the production and milk marketing facilities under it, very soon after, it was named Kerala Livestock Development Board.

Nirula’s

One of the oldest food chains in North India especially in Delhi and NCR. This became the first fast food restaurant to be opened in the center of the city, Connaught Place in 1977. There are 70 outlets in different parts of North India like:

  • NCR Delhi
  • Haryana
  • Punjab
  • Uttar Pradesh

They also offer a Desi version of western fast food items.

The success here has enabled them to move ahead with a casual dining restaurant called ‘Potpourri’. Another venture of them is what we are interested in here. It is the ‘Nirula’s 21’ ice parlor chain. They have also opened their first franchise in Patna, their first-ever franchise in the eastern zone.
